was the amp driven hard for an extended time? components inside might have failed as a result.
given its age it's a possibility. the two big power capacitors or the regulators on the heat sink(quite a large one too) ...
Switching itself off after five seconds would be a short or thermal shutdown.
Failing regulators generate a lot of heat also...an issue with the internal power supply. With out testing it's only guessing.
The burning smell could even be dust inside as well.
Was there anything sitting on top of the amp covering the vents while it was in use?
Take it to a tech, and have them check it out, track down a copy of the service manual, techs appreciate that when
