Yamaha MODX and MODX+ Forum • How do I create the iconic "Girls Like You" guitars?

Hello everyone,

new thread this time as I'm no longer asking about the multiple keys thing, I came to the conclusion / figured out there are certain power cords that seem to work but I also no longer think powers actually used chords and all the power is in the synths used.

So let's focus on them:

For the ones who don't know: Currently I'm trying to recreate the distorted synth (guitar?) effect hearable from ~4:00 onwards until the end:

This is as far as I got using the MODX using the process described in my last post:

(still have to figure out the exact keys used, so only approximate demo keys so far)

Three things are still lacking:

1. Most of all: The distortion effect. It feels kinda similar, but still sounds much too clean and streamlined in my example... I don't get what's causing this melancholic / sad vibe in the original above? It feels like the distortion varies much more in there (perhaps it's due to amplitude / frequency changes, perhaps due to a tremolo or wah effect?) but remains very constant in my recreation.

I'm not sure what FX causes such an effect / brings up that specific 'sad' vibe? It's like the distortion is irregularly trembling / shaking in and of itself. It also sounds much more 'electric', but that's probably my mistake for not picking a more accurate base sample.

I already added a tremolo / wah in my example if that's what you're going to suggest, and played around with its parameters, but I was unable to even come close.

Leaving aside the MODX, perhaps there's a VST I could use in a DAW at the end of the processing chain that could help me there?

2. The reverb
It feels like only the high frequencies are processed by the reverb in the original, but I'm 99% sure the effect is actually quite simple and I'm using the wrong reverb parameters. No matter though what I use on the MODX, each reverb FX (from canyon presets to room size parameters) still has that close, "roomy" reverb that causes low frequencies to be part of the reverb, even though in the original the reverb is much more liberating and immersive. It feels like it actually extends the guitar synth and carries it on, instead of just making it more powerful / wide.

3. Dampener effect
There's also some funky stuff going on with dampening / wetting certain sounds, especially near the end of the original. I'm not sure how to properly dampen sounds on the MODX though / haven't found any proper effect for this?

Thanks in advance!
