The Pacificas (esp 112 and above) were the go to beginners guitar around here, before Fender really upped their game with the Squier Classic Vibes, and were wonderfully consistent (with great, low action for beginners to get accustomed to string tension). However, not without fault; you wouldn't believe the number of input jack covers we had to replace with metal ones because the plastic ones cracked very easily if you happened to hit a countertop, etc.
In short, still pretty good, consistent build quality, easy to learn on, flexible HSS pickup config; but no longer the only good choice. Entry level Ibanez, Jackson (still Fender, although their well-built DK2's are no longer entry level price like they used to be) and Schecter also worth looking at!
The Yamaha Revstars on the other hand, are absolutely killer...
