I was recently gifted a beautiful Yamaha FG140 acoustic, red tag. I am attempting to figure out the date of manufacture but the serial number has been damaged! Hoping someone on the forum can help!
I suggest you use the Contact Us link on Yamaha's home page. They keep track of all the serial numbers.

I hope it didn't burn your fingers when you first touched it! LOL! Not likely but unless you know the provenance there is a tiny, but not zero, risk that whoever had it may not have been the rightful owner.

Seriously - I've seen them from the 60's on This site has some info you might find useful

While the serial number is visible, although not always usable to determine the date of manufacture, there is a Date Code ink stamped on the inside of all early FG’s, except most FG-75’s. This date code will be very close to when the guitar was built. Typically 3 to 6 weeks before it’s finished.

The date code is located on either side of the lower bout. Sometimes both or on the end block.
The format is YY.MM.DD.
The year isn’t the normal year we are used to. It’s the Japanese year based on the reign of the current Emperor.
