Hi all!

Just got my SX-920 delivered. This is my first upgrade since a PSR-3000!! Can't wait to try all the features I missed over the past 19 or so years!

I loved the piano sound on my PSR-3000, and was surprised that the default piano voice (CFXconcertgrand) on the SX-920 didn't sound as rich and to my ears even had a bit of an electronic piano sound rather than a full acoustic sound. IS there a suggested tweak to the EQ on the new models that should be done?
Er, the PSR3000 piano is *still* in the current boards. Must be a "viewing memory with rose coloured glasses" thing, because the PSR3000 piano was awful (really thin, 2 velocity sample acoustic). If you take the vce data from the psr3000 voice, you should be able to call it up on your sx920 (which *should* be using the Genos CFX and C7) and do a comparison. Failling that, just load up the Legacy piano folder, and Bright piano is the exact same sound as the bright piano on PSR3000. However, the PSR3000 had wonderfully (almost ridiculously) punchy speakers (15w +15w I think they were), with a ton of low and low mids, so everything sounded fuller through speakers than via line out or headphones. (the PSRs900 (12+12w)speakers sounded anemic by comparison, the s910 (also 12 + 12w)speakers were still less powerful but at least sounded more balanced EQ wise. THey weren't the only ones, Korg also reduced the speaker wattage on the PA800 (it was noticeably quieter than the previous PA). Maybe it was a trend at the time, dunno.

Anyway the PSRs950 speakers brought back the 15 +15w with bass, but the problem is the over emphasized the treble - the sound ended up being way too scooped, and frankly a bit harsh. The s970/s975 had a very nice balanced 15+15w speaker setup; you'd think the best, but no, they put that on the PSRA3000 (based on the pSRs770 chipset but with the same 512m expansion as the s970, same 15+15w speaker setup as the s970,but with more bass. Like significantly more... when I had the PSRA3000 next to the PSRA5000, it's amazing how much the A3000's speakers left the A5000's in the dust. Indeed the PSRa3000's speakers are more or less tied with the incredible Korg PA1000's speakers.

THe PSRsx900 speakers were a new 10+10 +15+15w, really, really clear with a very transparent crossover, but i still wish they had the bass of the A3000.

The point was, the PSR3000 speakers were so good that they weren't even *equalled* again until the PSRs970, some 11 years later, and the very high quality PSR3000 speakers probably coloured your memory of the piano. But it wasn't good, just find bright piano in the new keyboards legacy folder and listen for yourself ;) And yes, the inexplicably used the same piano in T1 and didn't even upgrade it til T3 (*that* piano is still in PSRs770, PSRsx600, and still sounds pretty good!)

And yes, I still have access to a PSR3000 to A/B this stuff. I wish I still had access to a PSR740/9000 /cvp209/cvp210 so that I could properly map the new drums to the old ones (as I'd previously mentioned, you now need to download the PSR340 pack to hear how different those super bassy but low fi drums sounded)

Mark
Thanks Mark - the speaker difference makes a lot of sense (and I still have the PSR3000 to compare). I did pull up the legacy piano, and oddly enough, I still prefer it. I would love to see a feature upgrade (besides voices and styles) between the two models, off the top of my head I can think of, chord looper, live control, wav audio...
