Yup, Bogdan as you and I both already know, if you haven't tried both, you don't know what you're missing.

I don't blame Keith at all, if he was let down by QA. As good a reason as any not to get a G2.
As you know, all my performances (in Youtube and when I'm live in concert) require registrations. Jupiter 80 from Roland *did* but there were no styles on board, just 3 (well, 4 parts, but 1 was "solo" monophonic) but still I was excited by it... never got around to doing a demo because I spent a month programming one into our Jupiter 80, only to have it sent to another branch before I could film it (It wasn't a big market item, so any store that potentially had a customer for it could request it for transfer). In the end I got the 50 on display, but it was even more limiting and I lost interest; we ended up getting that Jupiter 80 back, and we sold it right away so I never did get around to it.

Korg owners (and you, since you never tried the Genos/Tyros 5) don't know the joy of Ensemble mode. But it's *far* from perfect; in fact "Ensemble mode" strings on Roland Jupiter 80 actually work better than on Genos1/2/Tyros5; on Yamaha ensemble mode is really limited to 4 simultaneous notes (which is bizarre given that they used S.art and S.Art2 voices that already know how to switch mono/poly on the fly)

You *do* already know about registrations, and I can't live without em, so my choice is made until Korg decides to add it (no thesongbook feature is not the same thing)

But what about SSS? Korg Pa5x has it (not perfect, there are some sound switches where the original sound does stop, but there's a barely audible pop, unlike on the Yamaha where if we don't jump through hoops to do it manually, there can be an explosively loud 'pop' when switching).

Build quality? Yup, All the made in Italy Korgs uses metal cases (the made in China Korgs are all plastic, just like everyone else). Interesting that they get 5 years (!) warranty in Europe, in North America Korg only gets 1 year for portables, 2 for furniture models. (Yamaha are 2 years for portables, 3 years for non-delivery furniture models, 5 years for models that include delivery, and 10 years for acoustics)

But yes, I love the build of the Pa5x (and 4x before that). The build qualify of the the PA1000/PA700 is *worse* than PSRs970/s770, btw. (but then so is sx700/sx900!)

It's all down to familiarity of workflow i guess. It took me 10 minutes to do an entire style for Billie Jean (with A/B/C/D variations, fills and intro. I didn't bother doing an ending, just the 1 beat and stop). I spent an hour on a Pa900 trying to program the same thing, and only managed the A variation.

As you already know, on Yamaha I can hold a note on a style channel, then use a competely different instrument to play different notes on the same channel. You can't with Korg. on the other hand, Pa5x (but not 4x or any other Korg arranger) can play 2 styles simultaneously (which is really neat). *AND* on PA5x I can plug in a mic with vocal harmony and a guitar with DSP's on it simultaneously; there is no Yamaha that can do that (presently... and I'm not sure they ever would).

On the other hand, I'm addicted to downloading samples for Yamaha to get *just* the right sound for something. Korg, you can make them yourself (You can on Yamaha too, but unless you're not doing any looping, it's a pain in YEM). but there aren't scores of people doing them. I asked Korg in July, how come the PA5x has been out for 2 years, but I still have no sample packs that are available to download, and they just hung their heads and said "We know"... all previous Korg models could download sample packs made for their predecessors (PA4x could install sample packs for PA1x, PA3x, etc) but not PA5x

The navigation of the file OS was also really really clunky, and everyone tells me it's improved on PA5x, but I don't see it (but I also haven't installed the 1.3 update yet).

Without naming specifics, I've had models from *all* brands fail. But just like I never had a Genos 1 fail (but I have seen T2, T4 and T5's with repair issues), I've had made in China & even Japan Korgs fail in some way (and frankly, this happens with most brands... Tyros were all made in Japan as well).. but interestingly, *never* had an issue with an Italian made one. Ever. (Pa4x,5x are made in Italy)

Unfortunately you really need to try it. My rendered audio from Pa5x vs Genos 2 sounds obvious to me here (and to every customer who's tried them here) but if you can't hear any difference, then... yeah! To each his own!

Mark
