I'm happy to report that you've been misinformed.A couple of audio engineers I've asked about this setup claim that I won't be able to use the Montage and the SSL12 simultaneously for USB input for Studio One, that when I want to record with the mics through the SSL12, I'd have to run the Montage with MIDI cables and lose the separate 32-channel IO with the DAW.
While most DAWs can only address one audio interface at any one time, macOS has a facility to merge audio interfaces into an aggregate device, so that all the inputs and outputs for all your devices can appear at the same time as a single unified interface to your DAW.
I have a couple of videos on the subject, specifically for Montage when working with Logic Pro, but the aggregate device setup is identical regardless of your DAW of choice:
Managing audio devices: How to use Yamaha MONTAGE and MODX with Logic Pro (2023)
Fixing a broken aggregate device: How to use Yamaha MONTAGE and MODX with Logic Pro (2023)
And if I had to add just one more comment here, there is absolutely no reason to use MIDI cables between your Montage and your computer, regardless of whether you use analog audio inputs or the digital USB channels. Although the audio and the MIDI share the cable, they are really two completely different and separate connections using entirely different protocols. MIDI cables are useful in a DAW-less setup, or for connecting Montage to other MIDI hardware that only has DIN MIDI ports, but anyone who tells you to use MIDI cables between the Montage and the Mac is doing it wrong.
