Ok, but could someone please explain a step by step volume control for the Midi file? I don't understand why Yamaha makes it so difficult and without clear directions, and this answer that you gave, I can't imagine the How To just control this high volume in Midi files.
MIDI is only a set of instructions, it has no audio at all, therefore, in a sense, no volume control per se. The closest equivalent is that, in a MIDI editing environment (i.e. sequencer), one could insert volume commands at the beginning of a MIDI data file (the CC #7 commands that SSG referred to), which would instruct the playback device to generate its audio at a different volume. There is nothing Yamaha-specific about this, it is the way MIDI works. Because again, MIDI contains no audio whatsoever... only instructions that tell some other device what audio it should generate.Did you find a solution?

When the MX88 sees the MIDI data, it is the MX88 that is actually generating the audio, using one or more of its 16 Parts. What I believe SSG is then suggesting is that you adjust the volumes of those parts on the MX. (Each of the 16 Parts of an MX Performance has on-board settings including volume, see pages 41-42 of the reference manual.)
There's also a clue about this on page 58 of the MX88 reference manual. There you can see that the MX88 can play two kinds of song files: SMF (which is MIDI data, not audio) and WAV (which in this case is 44.1 kHz 16-bit stereo audio). On that page, you'll see, there is a volume setting for audio (WAV), but no volume setting for MIDI data, because, again, MIDI is not audio.
A caveat here: I've never worked with sequences myself. But I think that is the basic explanation for what you're running into.
