Yamaha PSR-SX Forum • Re: Advice Needed on MIDI File Compatibility and Formats for Yamaha PSR SX-720

one additional question regarding the different MIDI sound formats, i.e. GM, GM2, XG, XF, ...

When I load the same song into the SX-720, first time GM, second time GM2 etc. would this always lead to the same sound/voices "allocations" or would one get different/better sounding voices when loading a song for example in XG mode?

Does my question make sense?
Yep, your question makes sense! There are a lot of details to absorb and a lot of acronyms.

Short answer, I would start with XG. The arranger sound synthesis architecture is XG. Within XG, one can specify virtually any voice from the XG sound set or the panel voice/preset sound set. GM voices are effectively embedded within (i.e., part of) the XG sound set. I think that would give you the widest color palette and would best position you for the future.

I could say more, but I want to simplify and not create confusion.

One thing about Yamaha XF format. The actual XF specification deals with "meta" data like lyrics and chords. If a MIDI file is XF, it very likely is XG, too.

An XG SMF begins with two MIDI System Exclusive messages: GM System ON and XG System ON:

Code:

F0 7E 7F 09 01 F7F0 43 10 4C 00 00 7E 00 F7
The GM System ON message makes sure General MIDI messages are correctly interpreted. The XG System On message enables and initializes all of the XG hardware stuff (like effects, EQ and so forth).

From there, a voice is selected by a sequence of three MIDI messages: Bank Select MSB, Bank Select LSB and Program Change. That's the trio of numbers that you see with each voice in the SX720 Data List.

Hope this extra info helps -- pj
