It may seem odd programming wise, but when paired with the pads from the DTX6k2x/3x or the DTX8/DTX10m/x pads, it makes sense. Locked in groups of 3 (as you initially assumed) so that you don't need to reprogram *anything* going from kit to kit, and the hi-hat on the DTXpro and DTXPro x are second 2 non when using the RHH135 is *supreme*... I can't even get that smooth and realistic a hi hat sound from our VAD706 (incidentally, I've actually had 3 VAD705 and TD50 customers purchase the DTXPro and an RHH135 hi hat pad, just to have the best of everything; the VAD706 beats everything else (except maybe the clarity) of a DTX10 (Prox module), but even the DTX6 (DTXPRo module) has more realistic hi hats than the flagship Ekits of other brands.

Incidentally, you *can* unpair/unlock them depending on the pad you're using. Unfortunately, with a single zone or a triple zone pad, there is no such option, but I tried a 2 zone tom from the DTX8, and lo and behold I *could* assign the rim to a cowbell. It's just the 3 zone pads that Yamaha has auto locked (and single zone pads too, technically). But if you had 2 zone Yamaha pads, you would be able to unlock and assign.

I know you're dead set on using your existing trigger set, but if you could find a local shop that actually has a DTX8 or 10 setup, you'd see what I mean: the only flaw on those kits is the snare, which, while the snare pad *does* have pixel detection, they only modify the brightness of the sample depending on where you hit it; it's not a completely different sound like on the Roland TD27/50/vad507/706. The Yamaha snare is crazy clear, but without different samples or a modelling system, you end up with machine gunning on the snares if you do a proper snare roll. Works great if you're playing a pop/rock/R&B beat, but not so great if you're playing drumline or orchestral.

But the hi hats are *insanely* expressive and *clear*.
