From what I understood the OP *is* actually trying to format on the instrument when getting the error.Formatting IN THE INSTRUMENT is standard procedure for many boards . . . .
Maybe the drive can't move after a specific sector (lubrication needed?). Or needs a good head cleaning.
My two SY77 drives work well after some cleaning and belt replacement.
Formatting 1.44 MB disks to higher capacity is not that uncommon. Even MS did it. Remember the Windows 95 DMF disks?
They were formatted to something close to 1.7 MB. Because they needed to cut down on the number of disks needed.
