Home Studio • VST plugin effects vs built-in effects

Dear all,

As you know, both hardware synths like the MODX and Montage and virtual instruments come with built in effects (reverb, delay, EQ, filters, ...etc). Likewise, DAWs come with built in effects or you can use dedicated effect plugins.

Because we have endless choices in layering effects, we can create beautiful pieces or ugly pieces, depending on personal experience and trillions of trials. For example, I am stuck with the following three choices:

1- Disable the built-in effects on my hardware or virtual instruments and create dry tracks and then apply plugin or DAW effects during the mixing phase.
2- Create wet tracks (using built in effects in hardware and virtual instruments) and don't apply plugin or DAW effects.
3- Create wet tracks (using built in effects in hardware and virtual instruments) then apply plugin or DAW effects as a second layer.

What is the common practice for applying effects on an instrument regarding plugin or DAW effects?

Unfortunately, flexibility and countless choices come with a price, "CONFUSION" and I sometimes feels like you don't know from where to start, especially in mixing.

Cheers
/Jugge
