Yamaha Transacoustic LL-TA, LS-TA, FS-TA, FG-TA Guitar Forum • Thoughts on under-width saddle over piezo pickup.

Hello all

I was recently replacing the strings on my 2019 Yamaha FS-TA TransAcoustic which I have not touched in a while and noticed that the compensated saddle that is over the piezo pickup was very loose primarily from a width stand point and is that to such a degree it will literally just fall out if you turn the guitar upside down.

In checking over the specs on this, the listed part for this which I got directly from the parts replacement site is Yamahas part PN: WT83730E which for that parts dimensions are listed as 75mm x 3mm x 10mm, with the 3mm being the width part.

Its also described as being made out of Urea which from what little I have looked up is a form of a synthetic plastic.

In measuring my saddle, mine is 75mm long x 2.88m thick x 7.80mm high, with that height dif I think as it was installed to a piezo pickup guitar. IE, I think this saddle is used for a lot of Yamaha guitars, but was then shaved down to be used for these as I also looked at every other TransAcoustic guitar on their parts site and they used the same, and also for the few I have seen even listed that seem so be sold at places, there are not a lot of other options.

In measuring the width of the slot in the bridge for the saddle, that seems to be the correct 3mm width.

So I guess what I am wondering here is and yes I know this could be something hard for others to know, but given that this was installed on this guitar and was already shaved down for the height needs of the piezo, could they have also shaved it down width wise for some reason such as perhaps that was needed for the system they use to work correctly?

As side from that it seems an awful lot of thickness that could have been lost to just perhaps some kind of shrinkage, if indeed it even started out at 3mm and especially if that only happened an by this much width wise as the length is still pretty much right on at 75mm.

I guess overall my thoughts now are to replace the saddle as I would normally think its best to not have one be so loose, but I just wouldn’t want to go through all the work and especially if I had to take as much off as is need for the pickup if the way it is now is actually how it needs to be.

So if anyone has any thoughts I would be happy to hear them.

Thanks for any help.
