This was the *only* time where the 4 "Plus" packs didn't use up the expansion area. So it's 768 plus the "Plus" expansions (Oriental ME, Arfrica, Europe, Eurodance). You *can * clear the ppf expansion packs out, but the 4 packs included in Plus aren't expansion. There would be little point including the ppf of Eurodance since all the sounds are already in plus, but you *could* include all the styles from Euro Dance (the 4 plus packs only include a few styles from each pack)
For any other PSR, yes, preinstalled packs use up memory. In this one particular case, you couldn't empty the PLus packs even if you wanted to.
They also upped the audio style memory from 125mb on the s970 to 150mb for the s975 (or some small change like that) so you could put in 1 or 2 extra audio styles
