Hi Saul,
Thanks so much for all your help. Here is a more clear explanation of my issue (I'm sorry if a lot of obvious things are overlooked or stated here - I'm not very savvy when it comes to music production/synthesizers). I also apologize if I repeat unnecessary details.
When my headphones are plugged into the Phones jack of my MX61, I only get sound on the right side. (Halfway plugged in, sound from the left. I know this might not be relevant, but I thought it was curious).
When my speakers are plugged in (two Yamaha HS7's) to the two external outs (L/Mono and R/Output), I only get a signal from the right side, but individually they each work.
To answer your question about sound cutting out...
If I have an external speaker plugged into Mono/L, I get sound from it until I plug the other speaker into R/Output, at which point the sound "cuts" to being only outputted to the R/Output speaker.
If I start instead with a speaker plugged into R/Output, I get sound from it, and continue to get sound from it (and only from it) when I plug in another speaker to L/Mono.
I don't know if these additional details are relevant, but
When headphones are plugged into L/Mono, I only get sound from left side.
When headphones are plugged into R/Output, I also only get sound from left side.
Thank you so much for your help. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. As I said above, there's really no reason to suspect a hardware problem (though the age of the synth of course might argue for that). I've treated it very well. I've also "jogged" cables through the jacks a bunch and cleaned them very gently with a Q-Tip.
