Yeah, the difference in price in Canada is approxmately 1/6. Keeping in mind the PA1000 launched the same time as the s975, it's not really meant to go toe to toe with an sx920 or an sx900. It was intended to go against the s970
But as I'd stated before, Korg made a mistake making the PA1000/PA700/PA4x identical except the hardware (Pa4x sales tanked after the PA1000 released) so now, they are correctly using it as the midrange against the Pa5x (which I agree, they should).
The PA1000 is rather unique though; launched without HDMI and then about a year and a half after lauch, they changed the hardware to include HDMI out! Incredible speakers (massive bass reflex cavity); I daresay while not as clear as the sx920 speakers, still my favourite built speakers ever due to their incredible punchieness and warmth.
Remember, it uses the same sound library as the PA4x, which really isn' that far from the PA5x (the latter added 7 more orchestral hits, true round robin drums, and really good grand piano soudns... but otherwise, was about 95% identical sound library to the PA4x and thus the PA1000)
So they kind of *have* to keep the price of the PA100 high, because they're not directly competing with Yamaha; rather they're kind of competing with themselves (PA5x).
Remember, the PSRs970 is a stripped down Tyros 4 (with no S.ARt 2 sounds); sx900 is a stripped down T5 with no S.Art 2 sounds, but dumbed down versions of the Genos drums (and a few of the synth expansion pack sounds pre-installed); the sx920 is really close to a G1 (minus 84% of the S.Art 2 sounds, and minus ensemble modes/6 line outputs, XLR mic. Seriously, that's about it.)
But the PA1000 is 100% a PA4x (not stripped down), and little brother to the PA5x.
But why $1000 apart in India? My guess is availability (supply/demand) but yes, also import duties, as Paul already stated.
