Yamaha Montage and Montage M Forum • I took my new Montage M7 to rehearsal and ...

Ever since I purchased an M7 late last year I've been slowly programming it to replace my Nord Stage 4 as my new live performance instrument. I've recreated about 42 performances on the M7 that I had been using on the Stage 4.

Yesterday I finally took the M7 to rehearsal and left the Stage 4 at home. I realize what I'm about to report is highly subjective but since it was such a surprise I thought it worth a mention.

Every one of my band (ok, there are only 4 of us) were blown away by the sound quality and presence from the M7. Up to that point I had been playing it entirely with headphones. At rehearsal it was connected directly to the 16 channel Mackie mixer using a pair of balanced cables (stereo) just like the Stage 4 had been. The result was a new level of sound presence and dynamic range that we were not expecting.

Now, I've used a lot of keyboards in my 43+ years of off and on music performances and I don't remember ever being this pleasantly surprised with an instrument upgrade. Of course you don't get something good without at least one downside. The M7 is at least 10lbs heavier and it takes more of an effort to transport. But I think it's worth it.

The bottom line here is that I'll be selling both of my Stage 4s and buying a second M for my home studio.
