Yamaha Montage and Montage M Forum • Re: Montage M: Questions about Rhythm patterns/sample triggering.

Hi I’m currently working with an older Roland FA06 and paired it with a Korg Kronos as a live request piano entertainer. I want to switch to a Montage M6. I have a few questions I could not find in the manual.

1)It is possible to play a drum pattern as I read in the manual. I like to know if I can trigger multiple drum patterns (intro/verse1/fills etc.) like on an arranger keyboard? For my solo gigs I need drums during my performances and trigger different drum parts (midi files) during a song like a rhythm box (buttons next to each other for quick access).

2)The Montage M is quite an investment. I would like to pair it with a (cheap) 88 midi controller. I was thinking, why don’t I trigger a great sounding piano on the montage. Is it possible to choose which sound to play on the controller and montage separately? So let’s say I trigger on the controller all sounds on midi channel 1 and the montage triggers all the rest of the midi channels. It has 400 polyphony which is enough even with 16 layers in a performance. Are there any complications? On my Roland, I can turn parts on/off but I have no way to choose different sounds for the controller keyboard. I hear every sound which is turned on, on both keyboards no matter which midi channel I trigger.

3)On my old Roland FA06 the sample section is separate from the sound engine. This means I can trigger 64 samples on the drum pads at any time during a performance. The montage does not have pads. Can I trigger samples on the Montage that does not affect the (16) sound slots in a performance? Do I need to trigger those samples on the keys or can I have dedicated buttons for it (instead of the pads)?

Thanks in advance! Tim
You definitely can trigger different drum patterns. There are several examples of that in the preset performances that come with the M. There are also third-party sound packs that have a wide section of arranger performances.

The Montage MIDI implementation is very robust so I'd be surprised if it couldn't support what you need there.

As far as triggering samples, I'm only aware of using the keybed to do that. I use that myself.
