Hi Knorm, welcome to the forum 👍

I have come across the same issue on another guitar many years ago and that turned out to be a faulty pickup. Easily replaced but I have not experienced it on a Yamaha guitar yet.

If I remember correctly the LL16 has been around for at least 15 years. How old is the one you have?

It could be a preamp issue but If it were me I would first remove the saddle and check the pickup for any physical defects. It is normally just a long thin copper wire. If it all looks ok, just reseat the saddle and check again.

If it is an older model LL16 it could be the capacitors on the preamp are starting to fail. They are the most common things to go. As they age they dry out and you can sometimes see that by a slight bulging of the top of the capacitor.

It's all a process of illimination though so start with the easiest bit first.
