Yamaha Montage and Montage M Forum • Re: Why are so many people already dumping their Yamaha Montage M8x??

A few reasons I would speculate:

1. Heavy. This is a pretty heavy board and many would want something lighter.

2. Lack of certain features, (notably sampling, audio stem tracks, a more full fledged sequencer for production or creating midi stems)

3. Synth sounds might not be what some people wanted. AN1X is nice, FMX is nice, AWM is nice. Altogether they will give a gigging musician probably everything they would need, but some people are particular, they might not like the character of AN1X, they might want something more powerful than FMX, and AWM. Also the lack of a Wavetable/ish engine might upset the EDMish folks, the lack of a dedicated Organ engine might upset the other genres (although AWM works pretty nicely here).

4. Didn't realize the keyboard is more geared for live musicians and not Studio production. This keyboard main strengths is having a huge bunch of sounds on quick recall, being able to create splits/layers on the fly, and the variety and quality of sounds integrated. The dedicated buttons and knobs also gives this machine a somewhat analog feel for being As far as the individual engines, there is better stuff out there in VSTi (although very little that integrates all of this power together as nicely as the Montage. As a studio board, this might get less use, but in a Live setup where you are in pressure to be able to change sounds quickly, layer sounds quickly, play multiple parts via splits and what not, is this boards main purpose. The lack of a good sequencer, step sequencer, and sampler will turn off many Producers looking for a DAWless setup. That isn't this board's purpose.

5. They like the Workflow of the Nautilus,Fantom,Nord stuff better. A Korg/Roland/Nord user by heart might not care for the Yamaha workflow. And to each its own.

6. They are just trying out boards. Some people are just like that and will buy and sell gear very quickly to find what they like. I know people like that with basses, amps, speakers, etc. They will buy something sell it, buy something else, sell it, and so on and so on.

I'm guessing the Weight, Cost, Bulkiness might be the bigger factors though. A person might get tired carrying this around, trying to figure out how to put this in a Corolla. I think the polyphonic aftertouch might have tempted many people who really didn't want an 88 key, keyboard to buy in and once they realized the bulkiness factor and felt that polyphonic aftertouch might not been that important to them just decided to sell.
