Thank you TooTone

There are three things I would check however...
1) The Mod Wheel is all the way Down.

This actually helped a bit with the warbling and phaziness

2) The Filter Cutoff knob is all the way Up.

This makes some of the sounds richer. What I really wanted was clear, crisp, and bell-like EPs. My MX61 does not deliver.

Thank you MX49

“(1) The RHYTHM PATTERN light stays on all the time. Pressing it doesn't change anything. I haven't explored the rhythms yet but this concerns me.”

Why does it concern you? Have you tried pressing the EXT. SONG button?

That didn’t work. The RHYTHM PATTERN button is always on. It cannot be turned off. I suspect my MX61 is defective, but I don’t know.

“(3) I was disappointed that the MX61 doesn't play nice with my Roland DP-10 sustain pedal. I shouldn't be surprised.”

It should work if set to switch mode. It will not work if set to continuous mode. That should not be a surprise.

Wow! That worked. I had read that Yamaha and Roland use opposite polarities. So I had given up. Thank you MX49.

“(2) More importantly, the sounds just don't sound right. The pianos are very boomy. The electric pianos and other keyboards sound a little distorted or phazie. They warble a bit. Also, they are often loud in the mid-range but very weak at the lower end. They're just not tamed or something. The acoustic bass doesn't sound acoustic at all. When I watch people on YouTube going through the presets they sound fantastic. What could be wrong?”

Did you buy it new or used? If you bought it used, then consider a factory reset.

I bought it new about a week ago. I tried resetting twice, to no avail.

How do you listen to the keyboard?

I send the audio to a Cerwin-Vega XD8s subwoofer connected to XD3 speakers.

It would help if you would share audio examples of the things that you are hearing, preferably recorded via USB audio. Because from your description, I can not tell whether there is something wrong, or the described effect is part of the voice/performance (e.g. "warble" as in tremolo).

I am going to have to set it up with my laptop. I really wanted to be DAWless but I see your point.

It would also help if you describe exactly how you selected a performance/voice. Start the steps always with a quick reset by pressing SHIFT+SELECT, and then describe exactly which buttons you press and which performances/voices you select.

I tried Shift+Select. I like that feature but it doesn’t address the issues I am having with the sounds. Perhaps the sounds are meant to sound not-so-great.

“Can anybody advise me? I am new to fancy keyboards like this one and I am not sure what to do? I've only had it for a week. I can still trade it in for a MODX6--their discounted down to $1350.”

For all or almost all keyboards, there is a group of people for which this keyboards offers the most value per buck.

It does offer a lot of value for $719 (ongoing sale). You can’t argue about that.

You did not share much about your situation, and because of that, I can<not> make a recommendation about keeping the MX61 vs exchanging it with a MODX6.

Yeah, I was starting to consider the MODX6 because I thought it would have the higher quality sounds.

The truth is I just want a quality keybed that is light, with keys that are long and with good velocity-sensitivity together with about 20-30 high-quality sounds: pianos, EPs, organs and bass. I like the organs on the MX but I’m very disappointed with the EPs. Unfortunately, the industry wants to package together all kinds of bells, whistles, buttons and knobs that I don’t really need.

Similarly, if you do not know which of these two keyboard offers the most value for the money to you, then it does not make sense to exchange it. However, it might make sense to return the MX61 now with minimal losses, and then buy a keyboard when you know which one you need.

It is hard for me because my local music store doesn’t carry much. I traveled to Washington DC recently and visited four music stores. This is when I decided after trying a bunch of keyboards that the MX61 was good enough as well as affordable. Unfortunately, I was not able to try the Dexibel VIVO S1, Studiologic Numa Compact 2X, NI Kontrol S61, or the Roland VR-730, keyboards that I though would suit me, at least on paper. What I probably should have done was devote a 3-day weekend to visiting Sweetwater out in Indiana where I could have tried out every keyboard on the market. It is quite a distance drive, though.
