Yamaha Montage and Montage M Forum • Re: Montage M as an External Instrument in Logic

Sorry, I’m not a Logic user… but you neither mention specific MIDI Channels, nor do you mention the DAW REMOTE mode. Both of which would/might be helpful in your situation.

When you are transmitting on a MIDI Channel (or multiple MIDI Channels) from the MONTAGE M, with LOCAL CONTROL = OFF, the MONTAGE M Tone Generator will make sound if you echo the data back to the MONTAGE M from an active MIDI TRACK of your DAW (Logic). — or as you noted in the other thread… if you are attempting to transmit to an external device from a MONTAGE M Performance slot as apart of a Int/Ext setup. (Not sure… but I don’t think that is your issue)

If your goal is to record MIDI Tracks for the MONTAGE M then “MIDI Rec on DAW” turns Local Control Off… you determine what is heard by the Channel settings in your DAW. Each Part using a unique Channel to transmit.
If your goal is to record a soft synth on your computer, use the [DAW REMOTE] function set to “Logic” and use the “Plug-in” tab… then you can setup Controllers for that specific plug-in and you can take advantage of the feature in your DAW.

[DAW REMOTE] retasks the front panel for use in your DAW. Go to Settings and select Logic.
It has three major functions:
Track” lets you control MIDI and Audio Tracks in your Logic Project (communication via Port 2). Your named Logic Tracks will appear in your MONTAGE M screen in sets of 8 Tracks (unlimited Tracks)
Plugin” lets you control your plugin soft synth (setup Controllers customized - communication via Port 1)
Transport” temporarily switches the front panel back to control your internal MONTAGE M, as normal, while the Start/Stop and other Transport functions still work your DAW (Logic) great for when performing on MONTAGE M while recording to your DAW.

Sorry, it’s not a definitive answer but hopefully will help you get started.

What you don’t want to do:
Because the MONTAGE M can transmit on multiple MIDI Channels, you do NOT want a situation where these multiple channels are sent to a single receiving device unless it is a MONTAGE M.
…meaning: be careful not to merge multiple MIDI Channels to a single Channel. Often DAWs record any and all incoming data, all channels… Then merge all the data to single MIDI Channel for playback… that would be disastrous!
Ensure each Part transmits and then receives on a unique channel
If you are creating a Performance that includes both INTERNAL (MONTAGE M) Parts and what MONTAGE M calls an EXTERNAL Part/Zone… make sure you echo back each separate Part on its separate (unique) MIDI Channel.
