Yamaha Montage and Montage M Forum • Seeking any and all info on the new FM-X Settings page

Does anyone have any info (guesses?) as to the working of the new FM-X Settings page for the M models? Basically trying to figure out how it is intended to be used and how the new envelope and other parameters interact with, and control/shape the operator envelopes.

I have submitted the questions below to support and will provide an update with any response I get.

The FM-X Settings page provides a new, part-level envelope for FM-X parts. But you don't have the same control over the envelope parameters on this new page that you have for other envelopes.

Also there are two new parameters with interesting sounding names but no real description of what they do: FM Harmonics and FM Texture.

Because this functionality is new to the M8X we could find no previous articles or docs for similar functionality in other instruments and the new doc has only minimal info in the Operations manual.

Screens and parameters -> Part Edit (FM-X) screen -> Part Common Edit -> FM-X Settings

Everything after this sentence is what we ask support for more informaion about.

It would be a help if we could get more info about just what this functionality does and how it was meant to be used.

The two basic areas are

A)The default envelope that is shown
B)The FM Harmonics and FM Texture parameters

A1. Why are there no ‘Level’ parameters except for Sustain? Other envelopes allow changing the sustain level

A2. Why isn’t there a ‘Time’ parameter for sustain as there is for other envelopes?

A3. Does this envelope provide offsets for each of the operator envelopes (both carriers and modulators)?

A4. A sustain level of 0 is shown ABOVE the center line on the graph when a ‘center’ line would typically represent the center,
which is zero.

A5. How do the ‘time’ values for this envelope relate to the time values for the operator envelopes? Is a decay setting of 30
provide a direct offset of 30 to the operator envelopes or are the times shown for this envelope scaled somehow?

B1. What does the FM Harmonics parameter actual do internally? The range is -99 to +99. Do negatives values REMOVE
harmonics and positive values ADD them?

B2 As the FM Harmonics value increases are new harmonics added? Are existing harmonics modified in volume/power?
Using VisualAnalyzer we haven’t been able to determine the relationship between parameter values and the resulting harmonic
structure. Can you provide at least a general sense of what happens as the parameter value increases positively or decreases
Negatively?

B3. FM Texture parameter – basically the same set of questions as for the FM Harmonics parameter. Generally speaking, what
is the engine doing when this parameter is modified? How is what it does different than what the FM Harmonics parameter does.

Any info you could provide would be appreciated.
