Yamaha MODX and MODX+ Forum • Re: How do you force the MODX to keep system changes?

What happens to some users is they don’t realize the significance of Loading a USER File.
A User file saves and loads the Utility settings that exist at the time the File was made. Loading a USER File replaces the Utility settings and all User Performances, User Arpeggios and User Waveforms… as long as you load a File with your Utility preferences, everything is fine. However, if you Load a File that stored different settings, you may believe they are resetting on their own. They are not.

It is highly likely that most people who own a MODX/MODX+ create their first User File with the Factory Utility Settings in place. It maybe weeks or months later that they make changes to A/D In, or the MIDI/USB settings, or the Output Select assignments, etc., it is some time after you find your preferences for workflow, that you should update your older files with your newly formulated preferences.

You can load the older file, re-enter the Utility Settings you desire, then immediately SAVE by OVERWRITING the old File. Rinse and repeat until all your Files reflect your preferred Utility Settings. Never SAVE a User File without checking your Utility settings, because as you now know, they will become YOUR default preferences.

Item 2: QUICK SETUP __ The other thing that can influence what is Saved in your User File, are the three custom Quick Setup templates… and the Factory “Standalone” item. These are often misunderstood. These 4 recallable functions. Three are designed for the user to STORE their most used settings on your MODX/MODX+…1, 2, and 3 are user configurable while the “Standalone” is pre-set… a quick reset to normal routing to outputs, local control returned…. Etc (it may not include your particular preferences, but if it is the last thing you recalled before saving a User File you may have changed a Utility setting you’d prefer set otherwise.

The default configurations for Quick Setup 1, 2 and 3 are “MIDI REC on DAW”, “ARP REC on DAW”, and “AUDIO REC on DAW”. What they do is make a list of settings you would otherwise have to make manually… the MIDI REC template, for examples, turns Local Control = OFF, ensure the Parts are set to “MainL&R Out”, MIDI SYNC = MIDI, etc., etc., rather than you having to make these settings every time you connect, you can simply tap the “Quick Setup #1” box and all the stored setup parameters are made ready. It’s a macro - a list of instructions to make specific settings.

These are a guess, by Yamaha, that these are among the 3 most useful templates. But please realize these are nothing but a “snapshot” of some of your current settings in Utility, and for the Output Select assignments for busing in the current Performance. Basically, the routing changes you would make every time you wanted to record MIDI to your favorite DAW.

What if….?
If you don’t ever record MIDI to your DAW, you might have two other templates you might want to create, name and store in the locations for the MIDI and ARP REC templates. You might create your own Default conditions to use instead of “Standalone”, for example.
