Yamaha MODX and MODX+ Forum • Piano with reduced amplitude velocity sensitivity

This is another old trick that I want to bring up again to encourage more people to go beyond presets. On some keyboards it exists as a separate feature that is often called dynamics control, and it can be implemented in different ways.

We reduce the velocity sensitivity for the amplitude level, however, not the velocity sensitivity for the timbre (filter and velocity layers). When playing it isolated, it sounds like losing dynamics. However, when playing in a band context or with a backing track, it increases the dynamic range before getting lost in the mix.

On the first generations of digital keyboards, it was just one setting, and people used that all the time. On the current generation of keyboards with piano parts that consist of 16 elements, it might feel intimidating to make such changes. However, it is simpler than it sounds.

For this example, I use the preset CFX Stage, and we need to change two parameters for each element in the Element/Amplitude settings.

Use the following settings to reduce the amplitude level velocity sensitivity slightly:

Code:

ELEMENT | -1- | -2- | -3- | -4- | -5- | -6- | -7- | -8-----------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----Level/Vel | +24 | +23 | +23 | +23 | +23 | +23 | +23 | +19Offset | 17 | 6 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0
Use the following settings to reduce the amplitude level velocity sensitivity moderately:

Code:

ELEMENT | -1- | -2- | -3- | -4- | -5- | -6- | -7- | -8-----------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----Level/Vel | +18 | +17 | +17 | +17 | +17 | +17 | +17 | +14Offset | 18 | 6 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0
Don't worry too much about the exact values. The transition between velocity layers is not smooth on the MODX. If that was no problem so far, it will also be no problem if the values are slightly off.
