I've been creating my own patches on the MiniFreak and although I have the $4,000 Deckard and Oberheim both sitting here the $600 Freak is probably much more fun.
I pre-ordered the massive battle station Arturia Poly Brute 12 but I'm guessing the $600 Freak will probably be also more fun with the exception of the key Full Touch action which MIDI'd to Freak should be an insane rig.
Point is that nobody really needs to spend $4,000 on anything and you're not missing much as the $600 Freak is a blast.
Combine a miniFreak with a SeqTrak and a Go-keys and you'll never need anything again. No purpose for a M8 or PA5x/Genos2, PolyBrute12, Oberheim, Deckard's, Fantom etc.
That's why I'm saying these companies have screwed up undermining their proprietary technology and history of innovation by essentially now giving it all away for free. What's next is the question?
I'm sitting here with the best of the best and using the miniFreak & SeqTrak and I could literally sell my other top shelf stuff and never miss it.
Obviously if you're a traveling stage performer you buy the M8/G2/PA5x but what percentage are those of the total musicians or learners are there?
I don't like or use computer based software synths (I'm not a professional composer) but is this what is driving the free gear revolution? The Freak even comes with a software version.
Big gear sales should nosedive and the little gear sales should skyrocket. Well, kids or even young adults might spend $600 on a playstation/Xbox/I-phone before buying one of these $600 or less offerings but far more likely than a $4,000 one. Mom and Dad would gladly pay $600 over something far more expensive.
I worked at Waffle House in college and my Father was paying for that and I saved every penny to buy the SY77 & traded up to the SY99 something insane around 1990 like $6,000. In today's money that's at least double that amount. I now realize why my girlfriend left me.
Gear lust somehow overcomes our most primal instincts.
