Yes, they do work.
I notice in the instructions it saysI assume that doesn't do anything in your case?Rotating the HIGH and LOW knobsto the right increases the overalloutput level. Likewise, rotating theMIC. knob right or left also in-creases the overall output level. Ifthe overall output level is increasedin this manner, use the VOL. knobto adjust the volume level.
Given the age of your CGX it is quite possible that one or more of capacitors are failing. They dry out over time and performance then degrades. The white noise and low volume would lead me in that direction. I am not familiar with the circuit board of System 43 but I would imagine the capacitors are easy enough to see. Might be worth doing a visual check.
The B Band piezo is pretty silent in operation, but the volume output when maxed out is a pretty low.
The condenser mic is a bit louder but with decent output level a lot of white noise is introduced.
I cleaned the potentiometers which has helped a lot with regards to odd noises and pops, so it's a lot better than it was.
The capacitors being in end of life did cross my mind.
I'll try and dismantle the preamp and see what I can see. I couldn't find a schematic online, so no idea what to expect once dismantled.
