Yamaha DX & TX Forum • DX7iiFD w/ Grey Matter E! gain problem

Hello all,

I have recently acquired a used Yamaha DX7 MK2 with E! expansion card. I bought the unit off of craigslist, and when I went to see the unit, everything was fully functioning (gain, both headphone/AB outputs). After about 30 minutes of me and the seller messing around, basically all presets from either the E! expansion or internally were completely quiet at a sudden moment.

This is not all though - The battery is NOT dead, the unit fully recalls its previous status. Some algorithms of the FM engine have full volume however. If having specifics would help with the diagnosis of my problem I can give more specific information. But every preset is hella quiet, but if you go edit > CS2 (DataEntry) it will change the algorithm and produce a sufficiently loud sound.

I am not opposed to DIY or repair I have a couple digital mults and a soldering iron (despite having never used them) and no fear when it comes to opening the unit and testing voltages despite never having done it before. This synth is really cool and about twice my age so being able to get it to a fully functioning condition would be beautiful. I have the osmose and many eurorack modules / systems but this thing is really cool for a vintage synth in that it sounds great and has relatively modern studio things like midi implementation.

Any suggestions whether it be a hidden setting in E! or the DX7iiFD, or things to check on the physical board would be great.
