Clavinova • Re: CSP 170: Importing PDF’s, PiaScore, and MIDI

3. MIDI & Score creation: Please excuse the following rant, but what a plonk-arsed waste of &$^#%. This is the first time I’ve bought Yamaha, and first time ever using MIDI. And one of the main reasons I sold our beautiful Petrof and bought the CSP, hoping to motivate my kids to become more than grade 1.
“Import your music,” the sales rep said. “Look, play something, see how it writes out the score for you?”
I carefully butted in: “But the score is unreadable. It’s clumped everything into the treble clef, as if it’s right hand only...”
“Oh, you can split the hands in the config,” he breezed airily as he thumbed through his commission payment.
And thus I figured it must be so, especially as the ‘demo’ MIDI files looked like perfectly acceptable scores, separated in both right and left hand channels.
Nope, now naive I was. Oh, you can configure a setting ‘Grand Staff view of Right Hand’ to split from middle-C upwards for treble clef and below for base clef, but that is still incredibly crap as a lot of music extends above Middle C for the left hand, and below Middle C for the right. I challenge anyone to import a MIDI for Liebestraum #3, from anywhere... or even record yourself playing it... and then try to make sense of the resulting score. Even worse is Clair de Lune, which ends up so bad it is dauntingly scary. I’ve tried to use various MIDI editors to split left/right into different channels, but this is simply not worth the effort and I just want to punch myself in the face. I would need to totally re-write the score myself, which is stupid... when all I want is just something readable (refer to issue 1 above Re. Importing my existing PDF’s)! Seriously. And even when I think I have succeeded in fixing the MIDI file and import the result, the Smart Pianist app ignores it all and just displays it all in the treble clef again with totally unreadable notes.
Smart Pianist? It’s the dumbest thing I have ever seen. As it stands, this feature has possible limited use as a play-along when fine-tuning my own performances, but for score creation and reading it is as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike. And for my kids? Pointless. After one week of trying to use it and the stream-lights, they went back to their sheet music.

Please, I beg of anyone... can someone please explain how the MIDI and score creation feature can be made useful for anyone of intermediate level and above? Or where I can find MIDI files that can be used, already split into the correct channels without having to do this myself?

Looking hopefully for some answers, thanks for reading.

Kind regards,
Ozzi
Has there been any improvement on this since the release of the 200 series? All the marketing videos on YouTube talks about how amazing this is, but reading this makes me reconsider the planned purchase of the 295.
