Yamaha Montage and Montage M Forum • Re: No retail version of Yamaha's ESP Montage VST

Just thought I would reply here and say, I was wondering how much I would use ESP given I have a real Montage M in front of me...

I am currently redoing the backing track for Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb, as there is a chance we may be getting the Floyd tribute band back together, and I was never happy with the original track made by the guitar player in the band; he (having a really good musical ear) has all the right notes in the strings and brass, but the sounds were pretty naff - done on an old Roland JV module, which was good enough in its day, but we have so many better options these days.

Anyway, in redoing this back track I thought I would try using ESP (as I have no orchestral packs on the computer - something I do not usually use). I have three instances of ESP loaded for "arpeggio strings", "synth strings", and "orchestral brass". And being able to run those instances in parallel is really useful, as opposed to working on one track at a time (and then recording the track to free up the Montage) if I was using the equivalent performances in the Montage.

So, I am hooked. It would be good if they do bring out VST only version at some point. As I said before, Korg seem to wait a whole before they do that, so hopefully Yamaha are just doing the same thing.

Interestingly I have also been using Melodyne Studio to do MIDI extraction from its polyphonic Direct Note Access (DNA) function on the tracks I wanted to replace. On the old 80/20 rule, it is not perfect and needs some manual editing, but a lot better than me starting from scratch.

We are truly blessed these days with the technology we have at our finger tips in our DAWs
Something I discussed on Musicforums, as the use case of ESP had got me thinking,
I guess some folks would be using the ESP in conjunction with the MontageM, but I've come to realize that other than syncing, I can't see the point of me using them in the same place, unless like you, you want to have more than one Montage running at the same time for live gigging. I have one copy installed on my studio computer in which my main controller is the Montage M. We are allowed 2 installs, so my main use of ESP is on my laptop away from the Montage hardware itself. For me it would make more sense to have copies on 2 laptops rather than with the Montage. If I want to sync, I'd just plug the laptop into the Montage.
