I know I'm replyng to a very old post, but I wanted to pass on my thanks to Buzzard. I've dug our a rarely-used 25-yeaold APX-4A and found that it didn't connetc to my amp. Your comment about the battery connections prompted me to look more closely at this, and I found that wedging a small piece of cardboard underneath the battery in its housing (so exposing the terminals slightly more) fixed the issue.
