Yamaha MODX and MODX+ Forum • Re: How usable is the MODX series if you forcefully disable the screen's "touch" feature?

I've always been tempted by the MODX series, but several facts held me off. One of them is the screen, that apparently cannot be dimmed.
This is true, Montage and MODX have fixed brightness. The screen may initially seem to be the same, but actually MODX is more 'washed' out, so lower quality (I have both MODX+ and Montage). That's not very important as it does the job. But they are not dimmable.
I'm not even sure if the buttons can be, which is a huge issue on the CK88 that I recently ordered but almost definitely will send back.
Yes, button lamps can be dimmed (Have a look at page 51 of the PDF owners manual for more details).
I'd only consider the MODX series if I could put up screen dimmer foil or something on top of the touch screen, but I'm not sure if it's still possible to use the device by pressing buttons alone? (since the touch screen likely won't work anymore with the foil on it)
I would say the MODX is quite unusable without the touch screen, as it misses many of the physical buttons of Montage (Also note the classic Montage has lots of buttons but the interface is actually quite confusing. This is fixed on the new Montage M).
But I have used screen protector on mine and the touch still works. It does become more insensitive though and sometimes it clicks in the wrong place or click by itself. A lot of it has to do with application (if there are bubbles etc) so some trial and error is unavoidable. If you do apply anything on the screen make sure to recalibrate touch afterwards. The touchscreen is actually resistive touch and not very responsive anyway.

Since you wish to dim it, I suspect your use case is night gigs and/or closed spaces? Because in daytime in closed spaces it is actually OK but outside on a sunny day you really have the reverse problem. Much more brightness is needed (or a screen shade. Some people have made 3d printed ones).
