Would the 4GB per SWP70 have something to do with them insisting on Fat32? If they switched to NTFS, then for people like me, you'd need to carry around multiple USB sticks. I honestly don't know if that would limit it, but we both know the largest readable file in Fat32 is 4GB...
Hi Mark --

You're thinking, "Real, honest to goodness file system" for waveform memory. I don't think there is a file system as such. (At least the SWP70 patent never mentions it.) NAND flash favors sequential blocked access plus Yamaha subdivides compressed waveforms into a framing scheme. I picture YEM and/or the Yamaha software crafting the memory layout once and laying down frames (and samples) for speed. (lay out and write once, then access as fast as possible thereafter.)

The ONFI flash standard (all 392 pages!) supports variable-length addresses, but who knows if Yamaha has imposed its own limit on the address length. Well, if they told me, I guess I would be under NDA. One should be able to stack a bunch of ONFI-compatible devices since companies manufacturer enormous solid state drives using ONFI flash.

Argh, not an easy subject to explore or summarize -- pj
