Well that just opened up a whole philosophical can of worms

I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to performance. Art is breaking the rules & definition of what art is, to create new art using other art as tools for the inspiration & rebellion.
The creation within the performance may blurr the piece for some & possibly for the artist themselves until it is complete, but it can become great art in the process, of which the artist and some onlookers will perceive with perfect clarity.

Yeah I like to paint outside the lines, and break as many rules as possible, yet maintain a certain level of order & design. A performance is born from a design, and as part of the performance I like to improvise and continue to design the design of the performance while within the midst of the performance itself. Then use that new part of the design in future performances, whether while/for playing live or writing songs or recording stuff.
A performance can sometimes be the center of the musical universe, that encompasses everything that is part of it.

There is 'performance', as in how well it was done or how good the experience was. There is 'a performance', as something that is experienced in simplest terms. There is a guitar solo 'performance', of which the performance is for the guitar & the guitar soloist to show off their skills & their guitar/what it can do/how good it can sound...while at the same time the guitar & player are used for the performance.

A performance is about connection between the players, their instruments, the audience, and what's played. From an audience's perspective the instruments & musicians aren't just for the performance, they are part of it as a whole. My montage doesn't like when I just use it for a performance. It's wants to be the performance. It's a living thing that wants to be found, just like "The Precious"!

As a musician, I go to watch performances/concerts, and everything encompassed within the entire performance, in turn affects & inspires me to put on performances, thereby making those performances I experience as being an instrument of inspiration for the performances I put on.

As a Montage 'Performance' performer/programmer/sound designer/creator/tweaker, sometimes I inspire & create the Performance on the Montage using all the parts that encompass it, and other times the Performances inspire me to create. Sometimes I add a guitar Part into a Performance to be used for that performance, and other times where I find & tweak a guitar based Performance, adding more guitars, etc., just to show off what the Montage can really do & how good it sounds, such as in an intro to a song, or even if just for my own entertainment...

Artists become both the inspiration of performance, and the performance can in turn inspire the artist, such that they are for the performance and the performance for them, to feed off.

Be one with the force ... may the force be with you! :D
