Other Yamaha Keyboards/Modules & Equipment • Re: YAMAHA DS55 MIDI Issue

Hoping that this will help someone else...

I did find on Reddit, a user posted that the MIDI issue is caused by a setting on the DS likely from when I changed the battery and did not perform a Factory Reset.

Root Cause:
The DS55 was in the mode used to chain 2 8-Note polyphonic tone generators by setting one as "EVEN" and the other as "ODD" on the MIDI Note Rx such that 16-Note polyphony can be achieved.
The problem is that the UI on the DS does not let the user change the setting to "ALL", which is the Default operation mode. On other synths like on the DX7II for example, the UI does have a way to set this. This was I would assume, the result of over simplifying the UI on the DS, and the fact that the battery change ended up leaving this set as "ODD" in my DS55...

Solution:
Perform the "FACTORY SET" using the following procedure:

DS55 FACTORY SET Procedure:

Press the following keys in this order and keep them pressed:

Tune, Store, Start/stop, Select, then either: 0 (for manual mode), or 1 (for automatic test mode)
the Display will ask if you want to enter Test Mode, press On/Yes (+1) Key

I would recommend to always use Manual, in Auto mode, it will run all the tests, and in some of them, as noted below, you will need to intervene:

You can choose, by pressing the # Keys:

01 Ram memory
02 Battery (3.1 V for full battery)
03 Left channel
04 Right channel
05 LCD test
06 LED test
07 Pitch bend range 0-99 (move the wheel)
08 Modulation range 0-99 (move the wheel)
09 Sustain plug 0/1 (plug in and out the plug of the sustain pedal)
10 Sustain pedal 0/1 (tap the sustain pedal)
11 Foot volume 0-99 (tap the FC pedal)
12 Breath control (breath into the controller and pull the plug)
13 Keyboard test (tap every key of the keyboard from left to right)
14 Knob test (tap every other knobs)
15 MIDI
16 Tone generator test (all 8 generators are tested)
17 Factory set (Sets all Global parameters to defaults and overwrites the USER bank with bank A)
18 Exit self test

If you do not have the pedals for Sustain or Volume or the breath controller and you are in Automatic Test mode, the DS55 will be waiting for input and th only way to exit the Test Mode is to power off the unit, the test will get stuck until the Synth sees something on the port...

I can attest that runing a "Factory Set" did set my DS55 in the correct mode and I can now play ALL notes through MIDI, problem solved.
