I had same problem until i switched to using a different USB type-a cable. I think mine might have been a pre-usb2 cable.
Just a followup - so the cable definitely helped get rid of the "Device Backup Failed" message, but on the other hand it still was not really updating....the messages on screen indicated it was but after restarting it still had the old version and the update button enabled. I then realized I had old version of the THR Remote (Mac version) app, so downloaded and installed that (v1.4.0). That finally did the trick and now the firmware version really was updated.
