Yes - for the time being you will need to do backups to the USB stick. Is there a way to backup the entire synth directly over USB to a PC or Mac or do I just have to grab the USB stick and copy everything off of it each time?
For previous Montage models Yamaha had a pc app called Montage Connect that you could use on your pc to transfer stuff back and forth.
They have announced that the initial release of a new ESP (Expanded Synth Plugin) application will be available sometime in the first quarter with full functionality available later in the summer.

Those are the only 'announced' details but the rumor mill says that it will (eventually) have full off-line functionality of the M models. That is supposed to include online, real-time and bi-directional data transfers.5. Bundled license of Softsynth features MONTAGE M Synthesis Engine
MONTAGE M series keyboards come with a download code for the Expanded Softsynth Plugin (E.S.P.) for MONTAGE M, which is a software synthesizer (VST3, AU) that can replicate all MONTAGE M series sounds, offering more powerful stage and studio integration.
We are planning on releasing E.S.P. in early 2024. The first version will have MONTAGE M sound, while being limited to basic editing. The full version is planned for release in summer 2024.
Until then:
1. get a coupld of high quality USB sticks
2. format them on the M (not on your pc)
3. copy things off to your pc
4. periodically test that you can reload the backups again. Just as with a pc or database backup it is useless
if you can't reload it later and many people never test reloading to make sure they actually have a good backup.
