Yamaha Montage and Montage M Forum • Re: Portamento of string sounds in Montage

Welcome to the forum!
I think that string sounds, when they require connected notes when playing a song ("legato", which we do when we set the timbre to "mono"), portamento sounds very unpleasant, in a very synthetic way.
Which Montage model did you buy? Is it one of the new M models?

Could you provide more detailed info about your particular issue? Are you using a preset performance or building your own? If preset which one?

The AWM2 engine uses one or more of the 10,000+ preset waveforms listed in the Data List doc.
https://usa.yamaha.com/products/music_p ... loads.html

Each one of those 'waveforms' is really a set of individual samples. Each sample is essentially a 'wav' file for a single note. That wav file is 'looped' to play that single note over and over. The start of a sample for a single note for a stringed instrument will contain an 'attack' sound that gets the sound started.

If you play that same sample from the beginning, even rapidly, it will play that 'attack' portion again and again and can cause that 'legato' issue you mentioned.

Now take a look at waveforms 954 - 965 in the data list. Each of these 12 waveforms is part of the 'Cello1' set. Notice the abbreviations listed: St, L, R, St+, L+, R+, St-, L-, R-, St Offset, L Offset, R Offset

The 'St' indicates a stereo sample while L and R are left only and right only. The 'Offset' samples are designed specifically to SKIP the attack portion of the sample. That is, play begins at an 'offset' from the start so that the attack portion doesn't sound.

For the cleanest legato play you want to use samples with 'offset' in their name.

Different preset performances may, or may not, have parts designed specifically for legato play. Many presets are better used as 'showcases' to show what is possible.

One approach is to find a preset that closely matches the sound you want. Then either modify it to your liking or use one or more of it's parts to create your own performance.

One step in doing that will be to examine the waveforms it is using and then review the data list to see what other versions (e.g. 'offset') of that waveform are available.

That is the best general advice I can offer.

If you have a specific problem you need help with then provide ALL of the detail you can and someone will try to help you with more specific guidance.

This article has a paragraph that further explains what I tried to say above about implementation

Legato – the Element will only sound when the Part is set to mono and a legato gesture is used on the keyboard. If a new key is pressed before the original is released then, and only then, will this Element sound. When this Element’s Waveform excludes the attack portion of the instrument, you can get a more natural legato phrasing result. Typically, a flute sample is recorded with the player attacking the note, making playing a legato phrase impossible with samples. The Legato XA Control feature allows the legato performing gesture to recall an entirely different flute Waveform, one that is without the attack portion of the wave (the sampled data is “offset” so the player’s attack is not included). The synth engine will “knit” this waveform into the sounding phrase. This allows more natural phrasing when attempting to play fluid woodwind or horn sounds, and can be used to great affect on lead sounds like electric guitar and solo string sounds, as well.
As the above states you might use two elements for the sound. One element would be the normal one - e.g. an 'St' sample. The other would be the 'Offset' sample. Then XA control would be used to select the 'Offset' sample when you play in a legato style.

Here is another article discussing how a MOTIF performance was converted to Montage and how the Legato issue was handled.

See the secion that begins with this text
The XA CONTROL = Legato is set for Elements 2, 4, 6 and 8.

To understand what and how this works, using the bottom row of right front panel buttons, MUTE Elements 2, 4, 6 and 8. (the Legato Elements).
