Acoustic Guitar Forum • Re: Acoustic Guitar solid wood vs laminate. Is it important?

I think that there are significant distinctions worth making regarding laminates. " laminate mahogany" can mean layers of mahogany glued together in crossing directions, or it can mean. ( and generally does today), very thin veneers of mahogany over 80% god knows what wood sandwiched in between. Perhaps some of the tonal qualities associated with the wood may exist in the former, but the quite frequently marketed notion that they can exist in the latter has got to be complete nonsense. I'm not condemning the use of laminate in guitar construction, ultimately the proof is always in the pudding. My impression of laminates, is that they can provide a lot of resonance because they can be thin yet stiff, but offer a rather muddy tonality in a guitar top.
