Yamaha Genos/Genos 2 Forum • Re: CFX Piano Sound On Yamaha Genos Sounds Thin?

It's Feb 2025 and I just bought a used Genos1 and the CFX/ C7 sounds "dinky dink" to my ears, meaning it sounds like a toy. I knew there had to be other users out there with the same complaint. The attack part of the sound is very light, and the sustained body is low in power, harmonic colour, and body, like watered-down fruit juice. I also noticed this issue on the Tyros 4 and have been forced to use its legacy piano (XG) for years. It has more warmth and body and fits in nicely when playing along with most pre-recorded songs, as I often do. I have since transferred that legacy sound over to the Genos1 despite it already being there, but my copied version has more body in the tail of the sound.

I have also just compared the Genos1 to a decent and very affordable Kawai with fully weighted action that my wife paid about a fifth of the price of the Genos1 for, but its interface is ridiculously simple making it hard to even know what type of piano you are playing! So Genos1 wins in that regard. But heck, that thin sound is real folks. If I play the C7 Studio Grand preset with the right pre-recorded song, it can either fit in nicely or fail miserably - but this may have something to do with the fact that pre-recorded songs have been painstakingly mixed so if you add a certain instrument to the song it may not fit in without first making some EQ adjustments to either the instrument or the song, so it can have its own acoustic space. So to play safe I play the legacy piano first and switch it to the C7 if it needs something extra, which is rare.
