I discovered this 3 months ago with a few kindle books I bought, since then I never went back.
The kindle books are only epub's anyway.

I contacted the author of the books I bought about this, he was not impressed either.
Rather than spend $8 on something I'll never truly own, and also can not register my PC as a recognised kindle device,
I spent my money elsewhere. A book store in a mall or Abebooks for harder to find titles.
A lot of people self publish through amazon, they probably aren’t aware of this, I wont be.

I have my little cloud of physical books. movies and music. I'm in control of my interests, not them.

Edit: the difference in australia was, no device other than approved kindle devices could download the book.
My only access to the books were via the web based reader. Because my windows PC is not approved.
There was no other option. This was back in early December.

Publishers edits of withdrawn kindle books, to align with current social "views" is sanitation and cleansing, 451°F
edit 2: it also puts words in the authors mouth which weren't theirs.
