step by step, how to connect an external reverb unit to the Yamaha MG20XU mixer?
For using reverb in the usual way choose an POST-fader AUX, say AUX3.

Connection:
Take signal from "AUX3 send" jack to the reverb input (usualy jack-jack cable).
Take signal from the reverb output to an mixer input (usualy stereo reverb so two jack-jack cables for L/R), say to ch 11/12.

Settings:
MIX - Set ch 11/12 EQ to mid, all AUX knobs to zero, pan/bal to mid, routing to ST.
REV - Set the mix knob on your reverb to fully wet (no dry signal source should pass, this is important).
MIX - Set master AUX3 knob on MG20XU (send master section) to the "triangle" mark.
MIX - Set proper gain and fader around 0, set AUX3 knob to the triangle mark in mic channel you want to be sent to reverb.
REV - Set input level knob on your reverb to an reasonable level while singing/speaking to microphone. See reverb's input level meter, must not be overloaded (shout into mic) and should not be too weak.
MIX - Set gain knob in ch 11/12 to the black mark.
MIX - Set ch 11/12 fader to "0"
REV - Increase reverb level by turning output level knob on your reverb to an reasonable value while singing/speaking to microphone, set slightly more reverb than you need, listen.
MIX - After this setup, adjust reverb level using fader 11/12 (decrease it slightly, as you wish). You can use ch 11/12 EQ to change coloring of reverb (decreasing low band, increasing high band, try it)

After this setup you can set ratios of inputs sent to reverb by AUX3 knobs on input channels, overall output level of this mix sent to reverb is set by master AUX3 knob. Reverb sound itself is returned to mix via 11/12 and mixed to mixer's stereo output. Reverb can be sent to other AUXes (like monitors) by 11/12 aux knobs. Keep AUX3 knob in ch 11/12 off.
How do we apply the reverb effect to subgroup 1
If you do not want to use reverb for anything else you can try to take signal to reverb from the "group out 1" instead of AUX3 send. Adjust reverb's input level properly.
Can the output of the reverb be applied to the stage monitors
Yes. I suppose you are using an PRE-fader AUX for monitors, say AUX1. Then adjust the reverb level going to AUX1 (to monitors) simply by turning AUX1 knob in reverb return channel 11/12.
