My Guess... as ever, there's no pleasing some people.
I saw the same happen with the MODX, and I believe the same happened with the OG Montage. My observation there was that those people hadn't realised they were buying a Synthesiser (or had chose to ignore this fact). Cutting away all the chaff, I suspect what they wanted was a Stage Keyboard, or an Arranger.
Unlike the Fantom or the Kronos, the Montage is ALL Synthesiser. For example, there is no dedicated Piano Engine, or Organ Engine. Instead, Pianos, Organs etc are built directly off Synthesiser (AWM2 or FM-X) functions, so any tweaking necessarily requires knowledge os the underlying Synth Engine.
Powerful, albeit complex Synth Engines are not for everyone. Some people just don't have the time, patience or sometimes wit, to learn and explore the Depths of Synthesis. By the same chalk, there are others that just lap it up, and would not want it any other way.
Speaking for myself, the MODX fit perfectly as an all-in-one solution for my needs... I needed "Real Instruments" + "Real Synthesis" with infinite customisation for recreating all those sounds I needed in a Live Covers Band.
If I'd have bought a Stage Keyboard or Arranger by contrast, I would have felt extremely limited, very quickly. On the Montage, there's usually a solution for any given scenario, if you are willing to think it through.
