Yamaha MODX and MODX+ Forum • A look at CFX Concert and CFX Stage

CFX Concert is a 4-part acoustic piano performance, and there are a few other performances that layer this 4-part piano with other timbres. Version 2.0 for the Montage added variants of these performances that replaced the 4-part piano with a single part piano. CFX Stage is the single part performance that corresponds to CFX Concert.

I think the multi-part performances (more specifically splitting one timbre over multiple parts) are not very practical. I guess that was the reason why Yamaha eventually added the variants with single parts. I took at look at CFX Concert and CFX Stage, because I think there are more ways to create a single-part piano out of CFX Concert.

CFX Concert consists of 18 element. 1 element is used for the key-off effect. 9 elements are used for notes up to G6, and 8 elements for the notes from G#6. The main reason for the key range split is to mimic damper free notes, which is done by setting AEG release time the the maximum value. Beyond that, the elements in the two groups are almost identical, except that the damper-free group merges two elements, presumably to fit into 8 elements.

The 9 waveforms in the first group are, and the elements are accordingly split by velocity range:
  • CFX ppp St
  • CFX pp St
  • CFX p St
  • CFX mp St
  • CFX mf St
  • CFX f St
  • CFX ff St
  • CFX ff f St
  • CFX ff ff St
The second group uses the same waveforms, except for CFX ppp St.

Waveforms can contain many samples, organized by key and velocity ranges. The CFX waveforms are obviously split into key ranges, however, apparently contain only a single velocity range.

CFX Stage condenses the 18 elements into 8 elements. It contains the same key-off element. It also contains the split at G#6. The first group consists of 5 instead of 9 velocity ranges, and the second group consists of only 2 instead of 8 velocity ranges.

For me a more useful alternative is to get rid of the damper free effect because I rarely need notes beyond G6. Use 8 elements with 8 velocity layers over the whole key range, and put the key-off into the second part. If I need the second part for something else, then I can easily drop the key-off effect. If I need it, it does not have the same practicality issue, because it is more like a second timbre.
