Take a look at the following 'scope screen shots. AN1x first with the parameter set to 127 (default, like an open LPF), 64 and then 0) and AN-X with the shaper first at 0 (no effect), 128 and 255Does that suggest that the parameter isn't needed on the M if the source waveforms have a better shape going in? Were you able to compare the relative shapes of the AN to the M to see if the M has a more 'perfect' shape?AN has an oscillator edge parameter, which is essentially a low pass filter on each oscillator (before they hot the mixer into the filter), which is a surprising omission, and AN had this because in old analog synths the waveforms were rarely a perfect shape.I'll see if I can set up a test to see what a spectrum shows when the shaper parm is modified. Maybe whatever it does isn't needed for a square wave or doesn't apply to it.AN-X has a "shaper" but that appears to be wave folding and that is not available on the square wave.
Do you have a hypothesis as to what you think 'shaper' might be doing?Did that Mixed saw have a particular use case for certain sound type? There is no Mixed saw waveform in AN-X
Let me know if there are any particular tests I could try to do that might be helpful in your efforts.
Done very quickly with limited time tonight (back to work and chaos

As I said, the AN1x edge parameter is like a low pass filter on waveforms and designed to approximate old analog oscillators which were usually non linear and not perfect shapes as explained in this article. You can see at the extreme setting of Edge you get a sine wave of the fundamental. So. Edge is taking harmonics out, and is available on all waveforrms.
The AN-X Shaper looks like wave folding to me and is adding harmonics in - quite nasty and raspy at its full setting, and is not available on square waves.
This lack of an edge option made a difference to the AN1x pad I was seeking to emulate, which is dual layer (so four oscillators) and the pulse waves have been set with Edge to 100 to round them off. Will need to take a closer look to see the visual difference but it is quite audible, you have a softer wave with less harmonics going into the mixer/filter, which tames the sound. I suppose you might argue you could just set the main filter a little differently to get the same effect, but the AN1x designers obviously had that parameter for a reason (see above). E.g. you could emulate a synth with a perfect square wave, but less perfect saw before hitting the mixer/filter.
AN1x Edge 127
AN1x Edge 64
AN1x Edge 0
AN-X Shaper 0
AN-X Shaper 128
AN-X Shaper 255
