Yamaha Montage and Montage M Forum • Re: Montage M FM-X vs. Korg Opsix?

FM-X is difficult to learn to get desired results with. It's not at all intuitive, takes weeks or even months to become sufficiently familiar with it that new sound creation makes sense.

Some FM purists seem to think this difficulty curve should be part and parcel of learning to edit and shape FM.

Korg went an entirely different way and attempted to make FM user friendly. I think they succeeded greatly!

The Opsix is in another realm of FM usability - I think - it's far and away the most intuitive and capable FM synth ever made. It goes beyond other FM synths in terms of both ease of adjustments and wave types. Vastly underrated synth. Enormous fun to use and can do things and make sounds not possible with even the best FM plugins, because it doesn't ascribe to the traditional limitations of FM style synths.

There's also a nasal quality to Yamaha's FM-X that is hard to unhear once you're familiar with it.

The great strength of the Montage is the multitimbrality. You can play many different types of FM sounds at once.

Opsix is monotimbral.

But those Opsix sounds are incredible. Its palette of sound creation capabilities is enormous. Far beyond what's possible with the Yamaha. It's a new form of futuristic FM.

Coming back from sound designing on the Opsix to the Yamaha is annoying, limiting, unfun, slow and irritating.

Have a listen to a couple of videos explaining how fun the Opsix is to program and showing some of its wonderful sounds on YouTube. Here's one:
